Path To Hope

Path To Hope was created as a space for honest conversations about mental health, human connection, and the things many of us were never taught how to talk about. As a speaker, author, mental health advocate, and immigrant parent, I’ve seen how often emotional struggles go unnoticed — not because people don’t care, but because many of us were never given the language, tools, or examples to recognize them early. For a long time, I believed being a good parent meant making sure my children were successful, responsible, and prepared for life. What I’ve learned over time is that emotional connection matters just as much. This space is about those conversations. You can expect reflections, practical insights, stories, and gentle reminders that healing doesn’t only begin in moments of crisis — it often begins in everyday moments of awareness, honesty, and connection. I See My Sister

Conversations on Mental Health, Human Connection & Healing I See My Sister Hello friends, September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, and this week I want to introduce you to someone. (If this topic is one you're personally navigating right now, the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is available 24/7/365 by call, text or chat — free and confidential.) This is my sister, Soutomi, with my son when he was little. When I look at this picture now, I don't immediately think about mental illness or...

Conversations on Mental Health, Human Connection & Healing Parenting Woes & Permission to Rest Hello friends, Well, it's been another interesting week in our household! 😊 We're navigating some changes around our daughter's screen time, and my goodness, parenting a 13-year-old is quite the experience! We're trying to create healthier boundaries and encourage more family time. But of course, she's 13, and hanging out with her friends online is a pretty big part of her social life right now. And...

Conversations on Mental Health, Human Connection & Healing Maybe I Don't Have to Choose Hello friends, First, I want to say thank you. After last week's newsletter, so many of you reached out with messages, prayers, encouragement, and genuine concern for my daughter and our family. I read every message, and I truly appreciate every one of you from the bottom of my heart. 💛 I'm also happy to share that my daughter has now completed her first week of intensive outpatient therapy, and so far,...

Conversations on Mental Health, Human Connection & Healing When Mental Health Comes Home Again Content note: This week's newsletter discusses suicidal thoughts, depression, and seeking emergency mental health care. Please take care of yourself while reading. If you or someone you know is in immediate danger, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department. In the U.S., you can also call or text 988 for crisis support. Hello friends, This is a difficult newsletter to write. This week, I...

Conversations on Mental Health, Human Connection & Healing Sometimes We Need to Find Our Own Path Hello friends, Well... I did it. I recorded my very first Path To Hope™ Podcast interview. 🎙️ After months of planning, building the website, figuring out equipment, recording and re-recording my intro, inviting guests, and talking about this podcast... I finally sat down in my little home studio and had the first conversation. And I couldn't have chosen a better person to begin with. I also...

Conversations on Mental Health, Human Connection & Healing Sometimes We Need Another Language Hello friends, Today I invited someone into my home whom I met in a rather unexpected way. Her name is Teo, and I first met her at Red Gate Art Gallery, where she presented her performance experience called Word Play. I was fascinated by the concept, so I invited her over to share it with my 13-year-old daughter and another young friend of mine. And my goodness, I'm so glad I did. Word Play creates a...

Conversations on Mental Health, Human Connection & Healing When Your 13-Year-Old Tells You What She Needs Hello friends, My daughter sent me a text this week that I haven't stopped thinking about. She's 13, just started 8th grade, and in her own words, she told me she's about to change. She told me there will be times when she'll act in ways I won't like. She'll probably be rude sometimes without meaning to. She'll cry. She'll feel embarrassed. There will be days when she doesn't feel...

Conversations on Mental Health, Human Connection & Healing Sometimes We Begin Again Hello friends, Last week I wrote about dropping our son off in Charlotte and watching him begin a new chapter. This week, it's our daughter's turn. Eighth grade already. I honestly don't know how we got here so quickly. Alongside the usual back-to-school preparations, she's beginning something else too: therapy, again — this time with a different approach. Her new therapist specializes in working with...

Conversations on Mental Health, Human Connection & Healing Learning to Let Them Go Hello friends, Well, we're back from Charlotte, and once again I find myself wondering how these children grow up so fast. We moved our son into his first apartment with roommates this week. What made me smile was remembering that he'd actually found the place all on his own, back in February — a friend from the gym mentioned they needed a fourth roommate, he said yes, and just like that, another piece of his...

Conversations on Mental Health, Human Connection & Healing What We Needed When We Were Hurting Hello friends, There are seasons in life when everything seems to turn a page at the same time. This feels like one of those seasons. As I write this, our son is packing up for another year at UNC Charlotte. In a few days, the four of us will load up the car and make the drive to North Carolina together — one last road trip before another chapter begins. This year feels different. For the first...
